Event

Chapel Hide and Seek

Friday, 23 October 2026

The Chapel will be hosting an organised game of hide and seek, making use of the building and surrounding grounds.

The event will run for two hours. The first hour will take place in daylight, allowing participants to familiarise themselves with the available hiding places. The second hour will take place after dark, significantly increasing the opportunities for concealment.

Torches will be permitted for seekers during the second hour.

A headcount will be conducted at the conclusion of the event. Please don't wander off before the end of the game.

Rules

  1. Participants will be divided into hiders and seekers. Hiders are responsible for hiding. Seekers are responsible for finding the people who have hidden. Please establish which you are before play begins.
  1. Seekers must close their eyes and count to an agreed number while the hiders hide. Counting quickly does not entitle a seeker to open their eyes early.
  1. Hiding is only permitted within the Chapel and its grounds.
  1. A hiding place should conceal you while allowing you to get out again.
  1. A participant is found when a seeker correctly identifies them and their location.
  1. Once found, you should return to the agreed meeting point. Moving to another hiding place is not permitted.
  1. During the second hour, seekers may use torches. Hiders should note that switching on their own torch may assist the seekers.
  1. When the end of the game is announced, all participants must come out, including anyone who has not been found. The final headcount is compulsory. Remaining hidden during it will not improve your teams' final score.

Note

We've spent the last two hours looking for Michael. Apparently he was hiding close to Simon at some point during the last round but failed to answer the final roll call.

Does anyone know where he went? It's not the first time he's been absent, the last time he came to an actual service was 2012.

Michael Johnson-James – Update

Michael, who was reported missing during the Hide-and-Seek post-event head count, has since been seen outside a property in Wrinhale bringing the bins in.

It has now come to light that Michael is from Wrinhale and attended the event to obtain information about our application for a 5G mast; and he left before the final headcount to avoid being challenged. His absence was therefore unrelated to the effectiveness of his hiding place.

We spent two hours looking for him on the night, and I know several of you have organised search parties each night since he went missing. Had he advised somebody that he was leaving, this would not have been necessary.

This incident prompted the recent warning about spooks operating in the community. Members should remain mindful of questions concerning the mast application, even when asked during an otherwise ordinary Chapel activity.

For the avoidance of doubt, Michael did not win the hide and seek event. Leaving the Chapel grounds is outside the rules.

Members can stop looking for Michael Johnson-James following the Chapel Hide-and-Seek event on 23 October.
